By the mid-twentieth century, behavioural science had constructed a reasonably tidy account of habit formation: stimulus, response, reward. Observable, measurable, replicable in laboratory conditions. The difficulty was that human beings kept declining to behave accordingly. Cognitive science entered with an intention to complicate behaviourism by introducing memory, attention, and expectation as variables that shaped whether any habit actually held.
